Whether or not you have heard of IQAir, this company is widely viewed as the best in the industry and today we will take a look at their flagship model, the IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA Air Purifier. This company has consistently won awards year after year, and this specific model has received more #1 reviews than any other air purifier on the market. It’s not just the Joe Schmoe’s either, some of the top consumer report magazines, websites and air purifier experts are all agreeing that this purifier is something to write home about. Taking a look into how the IQAir HealthPro Plus works might help us understand the rave reviews.
The heart of this system is a four stage filter purification process. The first stage is a micro-particle filter. This filter snags all those particles which are indeed tiny, but do not require the efficiency of a HEPA air filter to trap. This helps prolong the life of the other filters which follow it in the system. We are talking about things like mold, pet dander, and pollen.
The partially purified air then moves on to the second stage of filtration, a granular activated carbon absorption filter. This stage is mostly responsible for the odor eliminating qualities of this purifier. The carbon has a very porous surface which provides a lot of surface area for chemicals to bind. These VOC’s, or volatile organic compounds are the chemicals which are easily released into the air from things in our home and float around a long time before settling.
The third stage of filtration on the IQAir HealthPro Plus uses a pelletized chemisorption filter. This unique feature helps by neutralizing harmful chemicals floating around in the air. By using an oxidation process, it renders harmful chemicals inert and thus harmless by changing their chemical structure. Very cool!
The final stage is the obvious one, the one we’ve all been waiting for, the HEPA filter. Now IQAir uses their patented HyperHEPA filtration system as the fourth and final stage of this purifier. This filter is several steps above what most companies would claim to be their HEPA air filter. Where as most filters that are certified HEPA have to be able to trap 99.97% of particles .3 microns and larger, the HyperHEPA filter from IQAir is guaranteed to trap at least 99.5% of particles down to .003 microns. This is quite a difference in particle size. Many irritants, pollutants, and allergens happen to be smaller than .3 microns and these filters really take care of what a run of the mill HEPA filter is skipping over. This makes the HealthPro Plus ideal for those with several allergy and asthma sensitivities.
The V5 filter is what makes this model the “Plus” as opposed to the standard IQAir HealthPro. This is the filter that takes care of gases and odors and is a pretty cool addition in my opinion, to the features of the regular IQAir HealthPro. It is costlier and the filter does require replacing, but they are rated to last 1-2 years which is a fairly long time if odors and gaseous toxins are of concern to you and your indoor air quality.
There have however been reports of this filter emitting an off-putting smell of its own. Not everyone who purchases this model complains about this but IQAir recommends running the purifier on high in an open space to let air run through the filter and wear off some of this “chemically” smell. I have seen similar criticism of a variety of other makes and models; this is not exclusive to the IQAir HealthPro Plus. I would expect that following these manufacturers directions should take care of any concern associated with the V5 filter and the added benefits far outweigh the potential cons expressed by a small minority of reviewers.
You will notice that the IQAir HealthPro Plus offers 6 speeds as compared with the common three speeds available on many lower priced purifiers. Now of course the highest of speeds on any purifier can get a bit noisy, but for most people in most living situations, this should not present a real problem and can even be therapeutic, aiding in sleep, etc. Really what more speed options means is that you can more easily find a setting to suit your needs at any particular time, balancing between cleaning power and noise accordingly.
While many “room” air purifiers are rated to clean from around 250-500 square feet or so, this purifier can clean a remarkable 900 square feet of air space. To add to the perks of buying a top of the line air purifier, the IQAir HealthPro Plus comes with a remote control to turn it on and off and adjust the speed. As a seemingly obvious afternote, this purifier emits no ozone, as some inferior purifiers do. Ozone has long been known as a health hazard and an irritant for asthma sufferer’s.
To summarize, while the IQAir HealthPro Plus is a high-end HEPA air purifier and does cost a bit more than some models you may have previously considered, this unit may be well worth it. Not only do quality proven products tend to last longer and work better throughout their lifetime than cheaper products, the health benefits offered by the efficiency of an air purifier like this one may be well worth the extra cost. Used by hospitals around the world, I would say this purifier passes my “good enough for my family” test! It really is about the best portable household unit on the market. Everybody who has reviewed this unit on Amazon seems to love it! Only 4 and 5 star ratings!
