The Electrolux EL500AZ: Large Room Purification from a Trusted Name

Electrolux EL500AZ Air Purifier

The Electrolux EL500AZ is a true HEPA air purifier designed for use in rooms up to 405 square feet (just over 20’ x 20’). It features an innovative looking design as well as added filtration methods and luxury features that make it a pretty good buy.

The Electrolux EL500AZ employs an activated carbon prefilter to trap larger particles, saving the life of the HEPA filter which follows. This prefilter also serves to absorb odor-causing compounds and chemical gases in the air. The unit comes with 4 of these carbon prefilters so you have your first year of replacements upon purchase (one every three months). The HEPA filter which follows is a true HEPA air filter meaning that it is capable of collecting 99.97% of particles .3 microns and larger that pass through it. This covers many of the tiniest allergens as well as bacteria. For those who really hope to address allergy problems or seriously improve the air quality in there home, a true HEPA air filter is the way to go.

Lastly, the Electrolux EL500AZ features Plasmawave technology which is not a filter per se, but rather an active method to help purifier the air. It works by emitting both positive and negative ions which bind water molecules in the air. The resulting molecules are highly reactive and bind and split other substances in the air (most notably VOC’s which may be toxic or causing undesirable odors, bacteria and viruses) and changes their molecular structure. The new molecules lose the properties that were undesirable and become harmless. This is the same kind of technology you may find on models from Sharp or Winix and is said to be highly effective. Beyond filtration, the EL500AZ offers a number of features which increase usability and convenience which is always a good thing.

Electrolux EL500AZ Features

There is an odor sensor on the EL500AZ purifier that, when in Auto Mode, increases fan speed in response to odor detection in the room. I would have liked to see the dust sensor on this model as well, but only become available on the upgraded EL500AX model. Additionally, there is a Quiet Mode designed for when you sleep which brings the decibel (noise) level way down and also dims the lighting on the unit to make it as unobtrusive as possible. This is definitely an appreciated feature inclusion. Many companies neglect the fact that often users run air purifiers in their bedrooms 24 hours a day. I love that instead of just decreasing fan speed (and thus noise), it actually dims the lights as well.

To further increase the user’s ability to balance noise, power consumption and cleaning power, the Electrolux EL500AZ air purifier offers 5 different fan speeds! These include the speed used for the Quiet Mode and the Turbo Mode. Almost all purifiers on the market offer three different speeds, with the occasional model (the Winix 5300 comes to mind) providing four separate fan speeds. Five speeds is a rarity and while it may be an often overlooked feature while shopping around, it does come in handy and I always appreciate seeing more than three speeds.

The Electrolux EL500 AZ reminds you when both the carbon prefilters and HEPA filter need replacing (every 3-6 months and 6-12 months respectively) so that you do not have to attempt to keep track. Though not particularly cheap, the replacements are definitely not on what I would consider the high end or the replacement filter price range either. This unit also comes with a wireless remote control to adjust settings from the couch, kitchen or bed without having to walk over and mess with the control panel. This is nice option to have and while an increasing number of purifiers on the market are coming with remotes, they are still not a staple.

While not the smallest purifier, the Electrolux EL500AZ is 24.3 in. high by 17.6 in. wide by 10.1 in. deep and weighs in at 19lbs. Luckily Electrolux thought to build in a convenient carrying handle and I have read about many users moving this unit about their house during the day with no problems. The CADR for the EL 500AZ is 260 which is not bad, especially in this price range. It uses 8 watts on its lowest setting and 112 on turbo. These numbers are straight from the user manual although I have seen varying numbers elsewhere on the internet. I think that this purifier definitely has a lot to offer. The number one thing that it probably has going for it is brand recognition. Most everyone has owned some type of Electrolux appliance in their lifetime. The brand has a great reputation and I think this makes it easier for many consumers to buy into. There is no problem with that! For me, it is not the most visually appealing unit, albeit unique and interesting. I do think that this design helps to keep it quieter during operation due to the vast area of the intake vents. This Electrolux air purifier would be right for those who are seeking true HEPA filtration from a trusted company and enjoy a few extra features to make the unit more convenient. Users claim definite results against allergies and odors and most everyone who reviewed the Electrolux EL500AZ air purifier on Amazon left fantastic 5 star ratings!
