By looking closer, we see that the Rabbit Air MinusA2 has not one, which is becoming increasingly common, but two pre-filters. The first designed to trap the largest of particles (think hair, dust) and the second trapping particles of a smaller size (smaller dust particles, pollen, etc). Immediately following is the BioGS True HEPA filter. Of course to meet this definition, it is capable of trapping a minimum of 99.97% of particles .3 microns in size and larger. Lucky for the allergy sufferer, this includes many of the most common allergens (pollen, dander, dust, etc).
While Rabbit Air claims their advanced bioengineered filter material makes their HEPA air filter better than the competitor’s, I had a hard time finding test data or details to prove this. Where as many HEPA filters are composed of glass fiber, theirs is made from a fiber which is inherently antibacterial and “destroys” allergens (dust, pollen) that would otherwise remain in the filter. Accumulated particles in the filter can reduce the efficiency of the machine by making more difficult for air to pass through, requiring more energy to move the same amount of air and resulting in slightly lesser air exchanges per hour. The Rabbit Air BioGS HEPA filter is supposed to eliminate that.
Here is where things get interesting; I have not yet seen this in any other brand of air purifier. Rabbit Air offers four choices of customized filtration to the consumer. This is the filtration stage that comes after the BioGS filter and allows you to cater the machine towards your specific needs. The four custom filter options are Germ Defense, Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber, and Odor Remover. I will comment a bit on each.
The Germ Defense filter contains Ginko Biloba extract which has been shown to kill the influenza virus, thus reducing its presence on the filters surface. While that might sound appealing if I were particularly concerned about germs, I am not…so it doesn’t. The Pet Allergy filter is an appealing idea, but quite frankly a HEPA air purifier in general should help with this issue drastically. Rabbit Air doesn’t specify what that filter specifically contains to help. I would imagine it is more HEPA filter media and some extra carbon for the odors.
Now the Toxin Absorber is the one that makes my ears perk up. It hits home with me mostly because I have read a decent amount of literature about toxins, their effects on the body, and their ubiquitous presence in our daily environments. That being said, there is also some data available that quantifies the ability of this custom filter to reduce and eliminate certain toxic chemicals. Many of these chemicals (ie- toluene, benzene, formaldehyde) are commonly found in paints, furniture, wood stains, carpet coatings and many other household materials and have been strongly linked to cancer, among other illnesses. The idea of protecting both my family and myself from these chemicals really appeals to me. Several of these chemicals were eliminated from the air within 15 minutes of running the Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A with Toxin Absorber filter.
Their last custom filter offering is an Odor Remover filter. This give the purifier some extra activated carbon and has been shown to improve odor removal efficiency by 6%, from 85% to 91%. For some people seeking an air purifier for the purposes of odor removal, this may definitely be something to consider.
To round out the 6 stages of filtration, following the custom filter is an activated carbon filter which is a very porous material and is included to help absorb gases and odor causing compounds. Lastly, the cleaned air passes through a negative ion generator which releases ions to bind contaminants in the air, effectively enlargening them and making them easier to trap in the filters.
The company claims that the Rabbit Air MinusA2 can cover 815 sq. feet of air. However, this is based on two air changes per hour and requires the use of the turbo setting. Therefore, I would say this may be better for slightly smaller spaces. For those not suffering from severe allergies, having a high number of changes per hour may not be quite as important, and the manufacturer does note that for allergy sufferers, 408 sq. feet (half of the prior number) is the recommended room size.
The CADR ratings for this unit are 208 (pollen), 200 (dust), and 193 (smoke). While these are not fantastic, they are not bad either. The Energy Star rated performance allows you to run this thing cheap! On the lowest setting, it only uses 8 watts (this is one of the lowest I have personally seen). Also worth noting is that the brushless motor allows it to be pretty quiet. Some reviewers on Amazon claim the Rabbit Air MinusA2 is dead silent on its lowest setting.
At 19.4 lbs. Rabbit Air MinusA2 is not the lightest purifier on the block. That being said, it is not particularly heavy and could easily be moved from room to room and on/off the wall. Remember, one of the biggest perks (in my opinion) of the Rabbit Air MinusA2 is that it is wall-mountable. I have not yet seen any other unit that is made to be hung up. As I mentioned, you can choose from several different pieces of art to go on the front face of the unit for a small upcharge (very reasonable).
The Rabbit Air MinusA2 comes with a remote which is always a plus; I love being able to adjust my purifier from my bed or the couch. The filters should last a year (based on continuous use), so replacement frequency and cost is reasonable. Considering the number of filters included in the replacement, the cost is rather reasonable. There is an auto mode (guided by the built in air quality sensors) and a Sleep Mode which utilizes an onboard light sensor to detect when the lights are turned off in a room. After 3 minutes of darkness, the unit switches to the lowest and thus quietest setting. When the lights return the Rabbit Air MinusA2 reverts back to Auto Mode.
Additionally, there is a Pollen Mode on the Rabbit Air MinusA2 which varies the speed ever few minutes with a higher setting to routinely provide extra cleaning power and extra fresh air during the constant onslaught of pollen season. All this is backed by a 5 year warranty with great technical support and customer service. There are certainly many appealing aspects to the Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A that have great appeal. This is certainly worth considering if you want an unobtrusive, stylish, powerful and feature-packed purifier for medium to large sized areas. Almost everyone who reviewed the Rabbit Air MinusA2 on Amazon had great things to say, with almost everyone leaving it a 5/5 star rating!
